Count It! Lock It! Drop It!™ Community Based Program Tackles Drug Abuse

Count It! Lock It! Drop It!™ is a community based prescription drug abuse prevention program founded in Coffee County Tennessee. The impetus for the program was the drug overdose problem occurring in the county among its 54,682 (U.S. Census Bureau 2016) residents.

The County’s Anti-Drug Coalition engaged its executive director Christina Merino, and grant writer/consultant Kristina Clark in developing a approach to address the problem. Through community outreach, awareness efforts, and collaboration with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, Manchester Police Department, and the Tullahoma Police Department a 24 hour per day drug disposal program was formed.

The success of this effort led to the development of the Count It! Lock It! Drop It!™ program. Through community outreach, awareness efforts, and collaboration with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, Manchester Police Department, and Tullahoma Police Department a 24 hour per day drug disposal program was formed. The success of this effort let to the development of the Count It! Lock It! Drop It!™ program. The terms in the program title are defined as –

Count It! – count your prescription pills once every two weeks

Lock It! – Lock your prescription pills and store them in a private secure place

Drop It! – Drop off your unused or expired prescription pills at disposal drop boxes located at participating law enforcement offices, or participating pharmacies

In June 2016, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee Health Foundation provided a grant enabling the initiative to expand to over 55 counties in the state of Tennessee. “Prescription drug misuse has reached epidemic levels in the state of Tennessee,” said Kristina Clark, CLD project manager. “Becoming a CLD community is an easy way for local law enforcement and anti-drug coalitions to encourage their residents to closely monitor their prescriptions, especially ones for opioids.”
